I stared at the screen.

I had never asked my mother to raise a cent.

Part 2

The fundraiser had been running for eighteen days.

At the top was a photograph of me asleep in a hospital bed, my gown slipping from one shoulder. Beneath it, Mom had written that she had stopped working to provide constant care. Melissa was supposedly driving me to daily appointments.

Mom had retired two years earlier. Rachel drove me to appointments.

The page had raised forty-seven thousand dollars.

My mother had never mentioned it.

I scrolled through updates written in my name. I don’t know what I’d do without my amazing family. Another said I had no insurance. A third claimed we faced eviction because every dollar went toward my treatment.

At the bottom was a photograph of Mom kissing my forehead.

I remembered that moment. She had asked the nurse to take it, then left before discharge because Melissa needed a ride to the salon.

Rachel sat beside me as I read.

“Don’t answer anyone tonight,” she said. “Save it first.”

We captured the public page, its updates, and the messages donors had sent. I gave the detective handling the assault the link and explained that none of the money had reached me.

Melissa had already told police she was opening a package when I grabbed her wrist. Mom supported that version.

But Mrs. Alvarez had heard Melissa say, “If it were that serious, she’d be screaming.” She had seen where everyone stood. The medical team documented my injuries, and I gave my account before surgery, while the details were clear.

Then my occupational therapist, Dana, called.

“I need to tell you something,” she said. “Your sister asked me last week whether cutting the dressings would prove you could manage without them.”

My mouth went dry.

“What did you tell her?”

“That she must not disturb them. That it could cause serious injury. I documented the conversation.”

Melissa hadn’t simply misunderstood.

The detective requested Dana’s records through the proper process. I authorized release of the relevant medical information. Meanwhile, the fundraising platform acknowledged my complaint and suspended further withdrawals while reviewing the campaign.

That was when Mom finally called.

“Why is the money locked?”

I put the call on speaker with Rachel beside me.

“Why did you tell people I wasn’t insured?”

“We were trying to help.”

“Then show me what you paid.”

Silence.

Later, records obtained during the investigation supplied the answer. Some donations had covered groceries and a pharmacy purchase. Most had gone elsewhere: Melissa’s car deposit, overdue credit cards, and a vacation rental booked for the following month.

My injury had become their income.

Their cruelest messages came after the fundraiser stopped paying out. Melissa sent, You’re ruining everything over a scratch.

Mom followed with, If you make us look bad, don’t expect a place to live.

I saved both messages.

Then I accepted Rachel’s spare room, arranged secure collection of my belongings, and told the investigator I would cooperate with both cases.

For once, my family’s threat had made the next decision easier.

I wanted to publish everything immediately. Every message. Every photograph. Every lie my mother had written beneath the word love.

My attorney helped me slow down.

“Tell people what you know firsthand,” she said. “Let the records establish the rest.”

So I posted one statement: I had not authorized the fundraiser, had not received its proceeds, and had reported concerns to the platform and police. I thanked donors and directed them to the platform’s refund process.

I attached no hospital photographs.

My body had already been used as advertising.

Former coworkers shared the statement. Donors began asking questions in places Mom couldn’t control. Her church canceled a planned benefit dinner and contacted contributors directly. The platform removed the campaign while investigators examined the transactions.

Melissa was charged over the attack. The financial investigation took longer.

During those months, I endured another procedure and weeks of painful therapy. My arm did not return to normal because I had finally become brave. Some mornings, fastening a button exhausted me. Rachel learned to wait until I asked before helping.

That patience felt unfamiliar.

Nine months after the kitchen floor, Melissa pleaded guilty to a serious assault charge. Her lawyer asked the court to consider that she had been under financial strain.

The prosecutor read her message about the “scratch,” then introduced Dana’s documented warning.

When it was my turn to speak, I looked at my sister.

“You knew I needed that dressing. Someone explained it to you. You decided hurting me was worth being right.”

She lowered her eyes.

The judge imposed a prison sentence, followed by supervision, and ordered restitution for documented losses arising from the attack.

Mom’s case ended later. The financial records and messages between her and Melissa established that they had knowingly used false claims to obtain donations for themselves. Their pleas brought additional penalties, restitution obligations, and a public record they could no longer dismiss as family gossip.

Mom wrote me a letter before sentencing.

Most of it concerned what people were saying about her.

Near the end, she wrote, I hope you remember I’m still your mother.

I folded the letter and gave it to my therapist. I didn’t answer.

A year later, I returned to work part time at a community teaching kitchen. I could no longer handle every task I once had, so we changed the workstations and divided duties differently. Nobody accused me of pretending.

On my first afternoon teaching again, a student burned the onions and looked ready to cry.

“We can start over,” I told her.

That evening, Rachel came to my apartment for dinner. My arm ached, and I asked her to carry the heavy pot.

“Of course,” she said.

No sigh. No camera. No bill presented afterward.

We ate beside an open window, laughing about the onions.

When my phone rang with an unfamiliar number, I let it ring.

Dinner stayed warm.

My sister held up the box cutter and said, “Let’s see how sick you really are.” Minutes later, I was on the kitchen floor, listening to my mother complain about the mess.
